Biography/History note
- Chang Yu-Chen was born in Shanghai in 1918, moved to Hong Kong in 1949, and to the United States in 1956. She was director, producer, choreographer, consultant, and instructor for Chinese opera amateur groups, including the Chinese Opera Society of Greater Washington, D.C. Chang studied kunqu under Yu Zhenfei and learned Peking opera stage management from Mei Lanfang. She died in Shanghai, China, in October 2003. Her husband, Vincent Y. S. Wong, is the donor of the collection.
Summary
- Chang Yu-Chen's collection includes 757 videorecordings of Peking opera, kunqu theater, some regional and provincial opera, and related performances of competitions, commemorative performances, children's Peking opera, and motion pictures and television shows featuring Peking opera. Included are copies of footage of performances by Mei Lanfang (1894-1961), his son Mei Baojiu, and many other professional artists. In addition to the videocassettes from China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong are videos that document Chinese opera performances in Los Angeles, New York, and the greater Washington, D.C. area.
