- The Archive of American Folk Song at the Library of Congress was invited by Horace M. Bond, president of Fort Valley State College, to record the program of the Fort Valley Folk Festival, with recording discs and needles supplied by the Library.
Summary
- Collection of sound recordings of performances of African American blues and gospel music and a war-time program of soldier's songs in connection with the fourth annual Fort Valley Folk Festival, March 5-7, 1943; also known as the Fourth Annual Negro Folk Festival at Fort Valley. Some songs are accompanied by harmonica, guitar, and washboard; some are performed by unaccompanied gospel quartets and choirs. This collection includes correspondence between H. M. Bond, president, Fort Valley College and Alan Lomax, Library of Congress (5 items, 5 leaves; 1941-1942), and continues with correspondence between H. M. Bond, Willis L. James, Bliss Wiant, and Benjamin A. Botkin for the Library of Congress (34 items, 38 leaves; 1943) regarding this project and additional recordings made at Fort Valley in June and July 1943. Also includes the program for The Fort Valley Peach Folk Festival, Fort Valley State College Auditorium, Sunday, August 1, 1943, directed by Willis Laurence James; The Peachite, Fort Valley State College, Vol. 1, No. 1, June 1943; and "The Fort Valley State College Folk Festival, Festival Number" of the Peachite, Vol. 2, No. 2, March 1944, which includes a history of the festival, music arranged by John W. Work and Willis Laurence James, biographical profiles and statements of support for the college and festival, and lyrics to "Roosevelt and Hitler: Bus (Buster) Ezell's War Time Song, or, Strange Things Are Happening in the Land."
