Biography/History note
- Arnold Schoenberg (Arnold Franz Walter Schönberg) (b. Sept. 13, 1874, Vienna, Austria - d. July 13, 1951, Los Angeles, Calif.) was an Austrian-born composer, music theorist, teacher, writer, and painter. He was associated with the expressionist movement in German poetry and art. In music he is remembered as a leader of the Second Viennese School which had shaped much of the 20th-century musical thought. Schoenberg emigrated to the United States in 1933, and became an American citizen in 1941.

Both subseries include a significant amount of correspondence with Schoenberg's teacher, Alexander Zemlinsky, and his students, Alban Berg and Anton Webern.
