Summary
- Collection of field recordings of Tlingit songs collected on cylinders by John R. Swanton in Sitka, Alaska, January 9-March 21, and in Wrangell, March 22-May 5, 1904, for the Bureau of American Ethnology, Smithsonian Institution. Swanton recorded a total of 41 cylinders; these are 30 which definitely contain plus 2 probably containing Tlingit songs; descriptions and text translations of the songs are in ms. 4118-a in the collections of the National Anthropological Archives. These translations have been matched with "Words of songs taken in connection with graphophone records," a chapter in Swanton's Tlingit Myths and Texts (BAE Bulletin 39, pp. 390-415). The cylinders were transferred from the National Archives in 1948.
