Biography/History note
- To honor the memory of Archie Green (1917-2009), a fellowship program was established at the American Folklife Center in 2010. Archie Green Fellowships are intended to support new research on the culture and traditions of contemporary American workers.
Summary
- Collection of 19 interviews including sound recordings, photographs, interview logs, and transcriptions of oral history interviews documenting the history, occupational culture, and experiences of tobacco farmers and tobacco farm workers in the Connecticut River Valley (Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont), where growing and harvesting high-quality cigar tobacco has been a mainstay of the local economy since the 1600s. Dale Cahill and Darcy Cahill, who have already produced significant research on the distinctive tobacco barns this region, used their Archie Green Fellowship to interview the tobacco workers and farm owners who continue this under- documented New England tradition.
