Summary
- Audio recordings, moving images, photographs, and associated manuscripts related to Burt Fientuch's fieldwork in numerous locations from 1975 to 2012. Burt Feintuch's Cape Breton fieldwork, made primarily from 1997-2012, focuses on local music and extends to occupational folklife, the revitalization of Gaelic, indigenous culture, and tourism. The work was primarily in Gaelic-heritage communities, but it also attends to Francophone and First Nations cultures. This fieldwork resulted in the book 'In the Blood' (Utah State University, 2010). Feintuch conducted fieldwork in south-central Kentucky, documenting music and religious expression, from 1975-1988, and in Northumberland and Tyneside, England, documenting music and dance cultures, with particular emphasis on the revival of the Northumbrian smallpipes, from 1985-1990s. His recent interviews with New Orleans musicians representing a range of genres has resulted in a book titled 'Talking New Orleans Music' (University Press of Mississippi, 2015). The collection also includes recordings of interviews and performances by an eastern Pennsylvania fiddler, Earl "Pop" Hafler, which were the basis of Feintuch's 1975 dissertation at the University of Pennsylvania, and miscellaneous recordings, ca. 2000-2006, of musical performances by fiddlers from northern New England and the Canadian Maritimes. The collection also includes a set of Northumbrian small pipes made by Mike Nelson for Burt Feintuch, 1987.
