Responsive Design in the LC Online Catalog
The Library of Congress has implemented responsive design in the LC Online Catalog user interface. With growing numbers of Library patrons accessing the Catalog from smart phones and tablets, responsive design enables optimal viewing and interaction in accessing the Library's collections via a wide range of devices. Responsive layouts are not only inherently accessible, they also improve reading and navigation by seamlessly adapting to the size of the viewing screen. Navigation on responsive websites is driven by vertical menus and submenus, and the displays employ more on-screen toggles and the folding of content into accordion "drawers" for smaller screens.
Navigation in the LC Online Catalog responsive design is centered in the header, which contains five main components: a primary Menu on the top left, LC Online Catalog branding, a Quick Search box followed by drop-down list of Search Options, and Account Login on the top right for patrons with Reader Identification cards.
Catalog Header: Menu
The Menu, located on the top left of each page, anchors key components of LC Online Catalog navigation. The first menu option links to Library of Congress Home, followed by a link to the LC Online Catalog Home. The Menu also contains Catalog Search Options, Ask a Librarian, information and frequently asked questions about the Catalog, Help, and links to specialized catalogs and tools that provide access to additional LC resources.
Catalog Header: Quick Search
The Quick Search box, located in the center of the header, supports Keyword (ALL) Quick Search, which finds all words in any order or exact phrases located anywhere in Catalog records.
Catalog Header: Search Options
To the right of the Quick Search box, the Search Options drop-down menu offers easy navigation between the Browse, Advanced Search, and Keyword Search options in the LC Online Catalog. After one or more searches have been performed during a search session, Search History also appears in the Search Options menu..
Catalog Header: Account Login
Registered readers of the Library of Congress - as well as Congressional and Library staff with Library patron accounts - may log into the LC Online Catalog via the Login link, located at the top right of each page. This service enables authorized patrons to request materials from the stacks and to view their requests and charged items in their account information. See the Guide for Requesting Materials in the Library's Online Catalog opens in a new window for additional information. Once logged in, the Login label name changes to Account. Smaller screens simply display a lock icon. The Login/Account menu also connects to Account Info Help.
Catalog Footer Links
Links in the bottom footer of each page connect to the Library's Patron Services RSS Feed, to Ask a Librarian and LC Online Catalog Feedback, and where appropriate, to context-sensitive Search/Browse Help.
